Michael McDermott, We’ll Rescue you (Salvation) (2007)
Upon opening our doors this morning at the gallery and hearing the ominous swarm of helicopters still hovering nearby, we felt compelled to express our support of those Oaklanders who have been occupying downtown for the last few weeks. Hearing of the extreme police response has been disheartening—especially considering how much of the this city’s history and culture has been shaped by activism.

We love Oakland because it’s a diverse city full of wonderful things—with plenty of room and lots of hope for even more wonderful things. Black Panthers, punks, and underground farmers alike rode down to the demonstrations on their fixed gears, scrapers, and skateboards and set up a miniature city in a matter of days. It’s difficult not to inspired by things like that happening in our lovely little city here.

We are glad to be in a place full of so many folks who give such a damn. Thanks, people, for helping to make Oakland what we love.
